In case you are new to this blog, one of my newest and most effective systems that I have been implementing is the ever popular Mascot Indicator. Implementing the mascot indicator to this Superbowl matchup, you have the Steeler vs. the Cardinal. Let us break this down. The Steelers mascot is Steely McBeam, a rugged looking steel worker often seen hoisting a steel beam on his shoulder. This imposing looking fellow embodies the culture of the Steeler's franchise, rough and tough players who do not partake in any tomfoolery whatsoever. With his two day old stubble and striking resemblance to Bill Cowher; this is a dude you probably wouldn't tamper with. At the same time, Steely is someone you could guzzle a couple of nice cold beers with; Rolling Rock or Yuengiling would be his beverage of choice, not that pacific northwest ale that many fancy men are fond of. The Arizona Cardinal's mascot is Big Red, an over sized rendition of the North American Cardinal. The North American Cardinal is a mid sized songbird with the male exhibiting a body of brilliant crimson red with a black face mask over the eyes, extending to the upper chest. Make no mistake, it is a strikingly beautiful bird, if you are into such things. I don't know about you but a songbird trying to inflict damage on an ornery steelworker seems rather comical to me. To Arizona's defense, understanding the non intimidating nature of the Cardinal, they have attempted to portray the bird as a rather fierce species. The logo that graces the helmets of the Arizona players is a bird with a scowl of sorts, looking rather peeved. As much as the Cardinal organization tries to depict an animal that is noble and stern, it is nothing more than an imitation of an eagle, a red eagle at that. It fails to invoke fear or respect. Rather, it invokes images of frailty and fanciness, much like Arizona's perceived team image of being a finesse team. I could go on ad nauseam, but I will spare you the rest of this silly diatribe. You get the point, Steely would strike this silly songbird and make it go poof; much like the poor bird that got obliterated by Randy Johnson's fastball. The mascot indicator is seldom wrong and it overwhelmingly points to one side, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
